Aircraft Regularly Featured on ‘Ice Pilots’ Visits Voisey’s Bay Site
The Voisey’s Bay site received a special visitor yesterday evening.
A Lockheed L-188 Electra Freighter aircraft landed on the sites strip during a freight pickup.
The aircraft belongs to Buffalo Airways.
The airline is the focus of History Television’s hit show ‘Ice Pilots’.
Peter Gillingham is the Manager of Charters and Logistics with Buffalo Airways.
He says the Lockheed Electra was at the site picking up a piece of heavy equipment for one of their customers.
The equipment was delivered to the northern part of Baffin Island.
Gillingham says the Lockheed Electra is a very unique aircraft.
The large freighter is similar to a ‘Hercules’ in terms of payload and speed.
He says the plane needs an improved airstrip surface to land.
Gillingham says although Labrador isn’t part of their regular route, they have made stops in the region before.
He says the trip itself will not be featured on ‘Ice Pilots’.
But the logistics and planning of the trip may be featured sometime after November during season three of the show.
