Province Releases Second Phase of Industrial Inquiry Report

The province has released the second phase of the Industrial Inquiry Report into the labour dispute between Vale and the United Steelworkers.

The first phase of the report was released in January.

It examined two of seven items contained in a terms of reference.

The second phase of the report examines the remaining items.

Local, provincial, national and international matters that may have contributed to the dispute, the disputes possible effects on labour-management relationships and the ramifications and cost of the dispute to the province and the parties involved were all addressed in the report.

The factors that led to the labour-relations climate at the site during the dispute and options to improve it were also addressed.

The inquiry made a number of recommendations in their report to avoid similar labour disputes to the 18-month strike at Voisey’s Bay.

One of those recommendations was that the provincial labour board be able to impose a contract to end lengthy strikes such as the one in Voisey’s Bay.

The full report can be viewed on the Newfoundland and Labrador Labour Relations Agency’s website.
