Sikumiut Advises Travelers to Take Caution Near Ships Track

The recent warm temperatures aren’t faring well for the freezing of the track left by the Umiak 1.

Vale’s shipping vessel left the Voisey’s Bay site last Sunday.

Sikumiut Environmental Management Inc. followed the Umiak 1 as it left the site placing safe markers and pontoons used for crossing the ship’s track.

Ron Webb is a Partner with Sikumiut.

He says the warm temperatures and snow haven’t been ideal for the freezing of the open water left by the track.

Three ice crossings constructed by Sikumiut are currently not safe to cross.

Webb says a crew is heading out to check on the conditions of the crossings tomorrow.

Travelers are able to use two pontoons that have been put in place to safely cross the ship’s track.

They are located at Tabor Island and Tâttuk Island.

Webb advises people to check with their information station at southern point to receive the latest information.

Shipping from Voisey’s Bay is closed from now until May 22.

The Umiak 1 is scheduled to make its next trip at that time.

You may be able to see the Sikumiut employees on a future episode of “Mighty Ships”.

A Discovery Channel camera crew filmed them in action during the Umiak 1’s last trip.

The episode is set to air this summer.
