Appiks Ready for Picking

Bakeapple lovers from across Labrador have been taking advantage of the chance get out and pick their favourite treat.

We spoke with a couple of berry pickers who recently harvested their share of bake apples, or as they’re better known around these parts: appiks.

Juanita Roberts lives in Cartwright, Labrador.

She traveled to Hare Island and Hare Harbour by speedboat recently to get her supply of appiks.

This was Roberts third time this year heading out to pick bakeapples with her family.

She says they picked 15-20 gallons of appiks in total.

Roberts prefers to either bake a cheesecake with her bake apples or eat them raw with milk and sugar.

Lovey Ford of Nain also headed out recently to get her share of appiks.

Ford headed to Bake Apple Bay which is about 15 minutes away from Black Island.

She says she and four others picked around 14 gallons of appiks.

Ford says this year was better than the last for bakeapple picking.

She will use her appiks to make jams, cheese cakes and other deserts.
