Coastal Daycare’s Summer Break is an Inconvenience for Parents
Daycares in each of the Nunatsiavut communities provide care for young children almost year round.
The only time their doors are closed is during the summer months leaving many parents with few options.
Jenny Lyall, the Regional Childcare Coordinator for the Nunatsiavut Government, says the closure during the summer months is due to a restricted budget.
Funding for the daycares is provided by Service Canada.
A small amount of their budget also comes from Inuit Pathways.
Not enough funding is provided to operate the daycares all year.
This is a big inconvenience for parents who work seasonally during the summer months.
Lyall says the daycare centers will close their doors for the summer on June 24.
The centres will begin operating again in September.
