Final Weeks for Nunatsiavut Fishery

The Nunatsiavut fishery is quickly coming to an end.

Junior Andersen is the Production Manager at the Makkovik fish plant.

He says the last of this year’s fishing vessels is landing its catch of turbot.

The total amount of turbot landed to date is over 250,000 pounds.

Andersen says about 50 people continue to process the catches.

He believes there is about a week or two left before they’re done for the year.

Meanwhile, the Nain fish plant is closing down.

John Ikkusek is the plant’s Manager.

He says a total of 12,000 pounds of char was smoked this season.

The last of the smoked product was sent to Happy Valley-Goose Bay on the Northern Ranger on Wednesday.

Ikkusek adds that the plant has already been cleaned and they’re preparing to winterize the facility now.
