Further Research on Alternative Energy for Coastal Labrador Being Conducted

The provincial government is continuing to look at the potential of alternative energy sources in coastal Labrador communities.

The Minister of Natural Resources, Shawn Skinner, announced yesterday that they will begin phase two of the Coastal Labrador Alternative Energy study.

The second phase involves the start of the Coastal Labrador Wind Monitoring Program.

The program will look at the feasibility of alternative sources of energy for coastal communities who currently use diesel generators.

Alternative sources of energy identified in phase one of the study include wind and small-scale hydroelectricity.

Nain, Makkovik, Hopedale and Cartwright have been chosen as the sites to carry out the study.

It will be conducted in the communities over a three-year period.

The study will gather information such as what is required for the construction of alternative sources of energy.

Data on the amount of wind at each of the sites will also be collected.

$877,000 has been provided by the provincial government to carry out the program.
