Future Hopedale Safe House Receives a Name

A name has been chosen for the new women’s shelter that will be constructed in Hopedale.

The shelter will be called the Selma Onalik Women’s Shelter.

Bev Hunter is President of the shelter.

She says Selma Onalik was very active in dealing with women’s and children’s issues on the community during her lifetime.

Hunter says they couldn’t think of a more fitting person to dedicate the new shelter to.

The provincial government announced a $1 million for the construction of a new women’s shelter last April.

The old shelter was condemned because of the condition of the structure’s foundation.

A tender for the new shelter is expected to be called later this summer.
