Homes Being Constructed in Hopedale to Replace Those on Contaminated Land
Construction has begun on the new homes of three Hopedale families who have been living on contaminated lands.
William Lucy is the Coordinator for the Torngat Regional Housing Association.
He says construction started recently on the new homes.
The three houses will be given to families who had been living on contaminated land since the mid-90’s.
The contamination was caused by drums that had been placed in the area by the American military.
The military were in the community during the operation of one of their radar sites.
The contamination is evident by the tar seeping through the ground and holes in the area.
The construction of the new homes is a result of an agreement between the province and Nunatsiavut Government.
Lucy says Greg Flowers holds the contract to construct the three houses.
