Inuit Remains Returning to Torngat Mountains

The remains of Labrador Inuit are being returned to their resting place in the Torngat Mountains Tuesday.

The remains of 113 Inuit were excavated from Rose Island and Upernavik Island by the Memorial University of Newfoundland in the 1970’s.

Both Islands are located within the Torngat Mountains National Park.

It was believed that all the remains were returned to their resting place in 1995.

MUN recently discovered that some of the fragmentary remains were missed during the reburial.

Those remains are being repatriated during a ceremony at Rose Island, in Saglek Bay, Tuesday.

Among the attendees are Premier Dunderdale and the Minister of Aboriginal Affairs, Patty Pottle.

Nunatsiavut President, Jim Lyall, and the Minister of Culture, Recreation and Tourism, Johannes Lampe, are also on hand for the ceremony.

Premier Dunderdale is scheduled to drop by OKalaKatiget Radio’s studio on Wednesday morning.

Be sure to tune into Wednesday’s AtjiKangitut program for a full rundown of the events from Premier Dunderdale herself.
