Lack of Harvesters Raises Fear of Shutdown at the Nain Plant

A lack of harvesters for the Nain fish plant has the Torngat Fish Producers Cooperative fearing a possible shut down of the facility.

As we reported yesterday, the Fish Plant in Nain has only one fisherman currently harvesting char.

This has put the cooperative in a state of worry.

Keith Watts is the General Manager for the TFPC.

He is calling on char and scallop harvesters to travel to the area and harvest for the plant.

Watts says they may have to seriously begin thinking about shutting down the Nain plant if more harvesters don’t come forward.

It’s not only char that’s needed at the plant.

The TFPC has raised the price of shucked scallop by 50 cents to $5 a pound.

Watts hopes the increase in price attracts more scallop harvesters.
