Legislation to Put CUPW Workers Back to Work Expected to Receive Final Vote Today
A bill that aims to put members of the Canadian Union of Postal workers back to work is up for discussion in parliament today.
The “Restoring Mail Delivery for Canadians Act” is expected to go through a final vote in Ottawa this afternoon.
If passed, the legislation will force an agreement on the union and Canada Post putting the union members back to work.
The legislation contains a smaller wage increase than what was in the latest offer by Canada Post.
The government is introducing the bill in hopes that the two parties will reach an agreement before it is passed.
Members of the CUPW have been off the job since last Wednesday when Canada Post suspended urban operations.
Members of the union were involved in rotating strikes for nearly two weeks before the shutdown.
The suspension of operations has stalled the flow of mail throughout the country.
Canada Post offices in Nunatsiavut have not been delivering or accepting mail since that time.
The two parties have been in negotiations now for nearly nine months.
