MV Dutch Runner Problems a Big Inconvenience
The MV Dutch Runner has been causing a lot of problems during the offloading of freight in Nunatsiavut ports.
Robert Andersen is the Wharfinger in Makkovik.
He says the vessel’s offloading ramp is too high for the community’s wharf.
Many of the vehicle’s coming on and off the Dutch runner have been bottoming out.
Andersen says the forklift is unable to make onto the vessel on its own.
A truck has been used to push the forklift up the ramp.
Andersen says there are no chassis for the offloading of the shipping containers.
The council has to be called upon to use their loader to drag the containers.
Andersen says this has been causing damage to the containers and the dock.
James Thorbourne is the General Manager of the LIDC, a partner in CAI-Nunatsiavut Marine.
He says their currently working on the problem.
One solution being discussed is to add more weight to the vessel.
Andersen believes this won’t work because the water at the wharf is too shallow.
