Nain Children Share Their Thought on Their Community
“I like Nain because it is the best place to live in.”
“Things get really dangerous when people drink.”
“Things I like about Nain is there is a lot of traditional things like drum dancing, art and Nalijuks night.”
“Children get tooken away from their families because of drinking and drugs.”
These are some of the things that a group of children said when they wrote a letter to their community of Nain.
The children, aged seven to 12, are members of a local Youth Program.
The program has been held by Nunatsiavut’s Department of Health and Social Development every Thursday evening since 2008.
The youth were asked to write a detailed story about their thoughts and feelings towards their community.
The stories included positive things such as the playground and their love of the land.
They also included negative things such as drinking, suicide and children being taken away from their families.
All of the stories are very touching and at times overwhelming.
The children hoped to impact change by writing these stories.
