New Award in Remembrance of Samuel Obed
The end of the school year is quickly approaching and that means many students will be recognized for their hard work.
The Jens Haven Memorial School is handing out three new awards to deserving students this year.
Vice-Principal of JHMS, Juanita Skanes, sits on the scholarship committee.
She says one new award is in memory of Samuel Obed who is known by many as
“Babiest”.
Obed’s life was cut short last summer in a tragic drowning accident.
His grade two teacher, Lindsey Saunders, created the award in his memory.
A plaque will be placed in remembrance of Samuel Obed at the Jens Haven Primary School.
The winner of the scholarship will receive a plaque and cash prize in recognition of their athletic devotion and sportsmanship.
Students in grades kindergarten to six are eligible for the award.
His mother, Benigna Obed, will present the honour.
Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro is also presenting a cash award to a graduating student who will be pursuing a trade in their post secondary studies.
The OKâlaKatigêt Society is to present an award to a senior high student who has excelled in writing or communications technology with an emphasis on promoting the Labrador Inuit language and culture.
All of the awards will be presented to the students on June 23.
