NG Representatives Retrieving Zoar Remains from Chicago
Representatives of the Nunatsiavut Government are in Chicago to help return Inuit remains that were taken from Zoar many years ago.
Zoar is an abandoned community located between Nain and Natuashish.
The remains of around 20 people were taken from the area by the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago, Illinois, in the 1920s.
Johannes Lampe is the Minister of Culture, Recreation and Tourism for the Nunatsiavut Government.
He says he’s in Chicago now to begin the process of returning the remains to their original location.
The grave sites which the remains were taken from have already been located.
A nearby site has already been selected for the repatriation of the remains.
A ceremony will be held to mark the return of the remains to Zoar next month.
The Field Museum of Natural History has agreed to cover all costs associated with the repatriation.
