NICG Declares a State of Emergency

The condition of the Nain’s fresh water supply has put the community in a state of emergency.

Tony Andersen is the AngajukKak of the Nain Inuit Community Government.

He says the community’s lack of fresh water has prompted them to declare a state of emergency.

Engineers from the provincial Department of Municipal Affairs were in Nain yesterday.

Andersen says they confirmed what the council had already known: the problem is caused by runoff from the newly-constructed road to Trouser Lake.

The NICG is now looking at options to fix the problem.

Andersen say the most probable solution would be to supply the community with fresh water from another source.

The government is leaning towards supplying the water from Annainak’s Brook.

The Nunatsiavut Government has already sprung into action providing fresh water to vulnerable members of the community.
