Nunatsiavut Fish Plants to begin Operating Soon

The Torngat Fish Producers Cooperative is gearing up for a busy summer at their fish plants in Makkovik and Nain.

Keith Watts is the General Manager.

He says they discussed this summer’s operating plans and the opening dates during their meeting last week .

The Makkovik plant will be processing Snow Crab and Turbot this season.

The crab season opens on June 15 and they hope to start processing by June 21.

The turbot season opens on August 1st.

Watts says they expect the Nain plant to be open for about a month this season.

The opening of the fish plant depends on the ice conditions.

Watts is hoping the plant will open by the first week of July.

They will be processing char and Watts is hopeful they will get more than last year.

The price of char this year is one dollar a pound for number one and eighty cents a pound for number two.

Watts says they plan to have up to 50,000 pounds of turbot brought to the Nain plant for processing.

Watts says they’re opening the Nain plant for a scallop fishery this season.

They are hoping the fishermen will be interested in the prices they are offering for scallop.

They are offering four dollars and fifty cents a pound for shucked scallop and twenty five cents a pound for green.
