Planned Truth and Reconciliation Commission Visit Has Lawyer Scratching His Head
A planned visit by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission to Labrador has the lawyer representing residential school survivors in this province scratching his head.
Steven Cooper is a lawyer with Ahlstrom, Wright, Oliver and Cooper.
He has been representing residential school survivors in this province in a class action lawsuit that aims to get compensation for people who attended residential schools.
He says the Truth and Reconciliation Commission will be visiting Labrador communities this month.
Cooper says he doesn’t understand why the commission would visit this province when the federal government won’t recognize the residential schools in Newfoundland and Labrador.
The class action lawsuit is now before the court of appeal.
Cooper says he expects a decision to be made on whether or not the federal government will allow the class action to go ahead in the near future.
Stay tuned to OK Radio to hear Cooper discuss the upcoming visit of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the status of the class action lawsuit.
