Polar Bears - Species at Risk?

The Federal Government is proposing to have Polar Bears listed as species at risk.

Mary Taylor is with the Federal Department of Environment in Ottawa.

She says they have to do this because two thirds of the Polar Bear population is in Canada and they have to do their part in protecting them.

Taylor says in the meantime they will be holding consultation meetings until August 1st to hear what different group’s have to say on the proposal.

This comes at a time when the Nunatsiavut Government will be requesting for an increase of quota for their annual polar bear.

Glen Sheppard is the Minister of Lands and Resources for Nunatsiavut.

He says they are aware that the Federal Government is proposing to list the polar bears in the species of concern list. However, he feels this will not impact their annual polar bear hunt and their request for an increase in quota.

As for taking part in these consultation meetings, Sheppard says they still have to find out where and when these meetings will take place.
