Proposal to List Polar Bear as a Species of Special Concern
The federal government has proposed adding the polar bear to the Species at Risk Act.
The Minister of Environment, Peter Kent, is recommending that the polar bear be listed as a species of special concern.
The recommendation was made on July 2.
The listing would require that a management plan be put in place to prevent the animal from becoming endangered or threatened.
The government is holding a consultation period to hear the opinions of groups on the proposal.
The consultation period ends on August 1.
The proposal comes at a time when both the Nunatsiavut Government and the Torngat Secretariat are requesting an increase in the Nunatsiavut polar bear quota.
The bears in this region are part of the Davis Strait polar bear population.
That population was said to be higher and denser than any other last September during the first ever Davis Strait Polar Bear Inter-jurisdictional meeting.
