Search and Rescue Centre Rally Held in Makkovik
Prime Minister Stephen Harper is not budging on his Government’s decision to close the Search and Rescues Centre in St. John’s.
He says, as part of his Government’s money saving strategy, the centre will have to be closed and moved to Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Even the Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, Kathy Dunderdale, could not change his mind.
This has a lot of people in the province worried and upset.
They feel closing and moving the centre to Halifax just to save money doesn’t make sense.
People who work at the Centre know the waters and coastlines of Newfoundland and Labrador better than those who work out of Halifax.
Another thing they’re saying is that the response time from Halifax during an emergency would take too long.
To try and get this message across to Harper and his Government, people in St. John’s held a big rally on Saturday morning.
About 2,500 people took part in the rally.
A rally was also held in Makkovik to coincide with the one in St. John’s.
Todd Broomfield is a resident of Makkovik.
He says he and his wife organized the rally where 83 community members took part.
