Slow Start for Nunatsiavut Fishery

It’s been a slow start to the fishery in Nunatsiavut.

It’s been so slow at the fish plant in Nain that the Torngat Fish Producers Cooperative fears a possible shutdown of the facility.

Deidi Kohlmeister is the Office Supervisor for the plant.

She says they now have two fishermen harvesting char for the Nain plant.

That’s only one more harvester than Monday when the plant started accepting catches.

Kohlmeister is expecting more fishermen to start harvesting for the plant on Friday.

Only 245 pounds of char has been landed so far.

Junior Andersen, the Manager of the Plant in Makkovik, says the crab fishery has been pretty slow as well compared to last year.

488,235 pounds of crab has been landed as of Thursday.

Eight vessels are landing crab at the plant.

77 employees are processing the catches.
