Torngat Mountains Wildlife Discussed at Base Camp

Wildlife found in the Torngat Mountains National Park was up for discussion during a meeting of several groups at the Torngat Mountains Base Camp last week.

Jamie Snook is the Executive Director of the Torngat Secretariat.

He says representatives of the Torngat Wildlife and Plants Co-Management Board, Torngat Joint Fisheries Board and the Torngat Secretariat all met at the base camp for the first time.

Snook said discussions focused on several species of wildlife found in the Torngat Mountains National Park.

The decline of the George River caribou herd was among the topics addressed.

Snook says they discussed how collars have been placed on some of the herd’s caribou in an effort to find what’s causing the decline.

Discussions also focused on the possibility of creating a weir fishery for research on Arctic Char.

Snook says the creation of a weir fishery is still in the early stages.

The Executive Director adds that a workshop may take place this fall where further discussion will take place on the matter.
