Wally Andersen Shares Residential School Stories

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada heard from residential school survivors in Happy Valley-Goose Bay on Tuesday.

Former MHA for the Torngat Mountains District, Wally Andersen, was among the survivors who shared their stories.

He says he told stories from his days at the dormitory in North West River.

He spoke of how sad it was for the many students who were forced to stay at the dorm.

Andersen detailed how hard it was to be away from home for 10 months at a time.

He says one thing that stands out the most in his mind is spending Christmas at the boarding school.

The children were forced to go to an unfamiliar church and were seated next to complete strangers.

Stay tuned to OK Radio to hear Andersen discuss some of his memories from his residential school days.
