Wandering Polar Bear Killed in Hopedale

A polar bear had to be killed after it wandered into the community of Hopedale last evening.

Corporal Mike Pilgrim is with the Hopedale RCMP detachment.

He says they received calls from a number of children claiming there was a polar bear near a garage in the community.

The RCMP, local Conservation Officers and the Canadian Rangers all arrived on the scene to find the animal lying next to the garage.

Pilgrim says it was a medium-sized female polar bear weighing between 700 and 800 pounds.

They were forced to put the bear down for the safety of the community’s residents.

Hopedale’s Conservation Officer, Ian Winters, says the bear will be taken out of this year’s polar bear quota.
