Nunatsiavut Experiencing Best Polar Bear Season in Over 20 Years

This year’s polar bear season is the best this region has seen in over 20 years.

James Goudie is the Wildlife Manager for the Nunatsiavut Government.

He says this season is currently tied with 1989 as the best season on record.

The Nunatsiavut Government has records of the annual polar bear hunt which span back to 1980.

A total of eight polar bears have been harvested this year out of the 11 available through the quota.

Goudie says the majority of those bears have been very large and apparently healthy.

The number of bears harvested this year is a big difference from the one that was claimed during 2010’s season.

Goudie expects the quota to be filled by the end of this month.

This will be the most successful polar bear season on record if that quota is filled.

There are only three polar bear licenses left: one for each of the communities of Makkovik, Postville and Rigolet.

The season ends June 30.
