Funding Cut to Torngat Recreational Commission Hurting Nunatsiavut Athletes

Funding for the Torngat Recreational Commission was cut back in April.

Makkovik’s Recreation Director, John Andersen, says it was a big hit for recreation in Nunatsiavut.

The commission provided funds to Nunatsiavut communities under two programs.

The Intra-Labrador Travel Subsidy Program provided funds to groups and individuals to travel to communities within Labrador for sport and cultural activities.

The Community Building/Leadership program provided funds for leadership programs in Nunatsiavut communities such as workshops and clinics.

Andersen stepped down as the Chair of the Commission in early-June because of the funding cut.

He says $60,000 was provided through the Joint Management Committee annually.

The committee is made up of each of the Nunatsiavut community’s AngajukKaks and Town Managers.

Nain’s Recreation Director, Lisa Ivany, took over as Acting Chair of the Torngat Recreational Commission when John Andersen left the post.

She says she’s already had to turn people down for funding.

Two young athletes from Nain recently made the Newfoundland and Labrador Volleyball Association’s provincial team.

Ivany says she had to turn them down when they approached her for help.

She says she also had to cancel an upcoming recreation Management Certification Program for recreation directors along the coast because of the cut.
