Makkovik Women Set to ‘Take Back the Night’

Women will ‘Take Back the Night’ in Makkovik Wednesday evening.

Lori Dyson is one of the Organizers of the community’s ‘Take Back the Night’ march.

She says the march demonstrates women reclaiming the right to be free of violence.

Participants will show that the women are able to walk without fear, particularly at night.

Dyson says women are meeting Wednesday evening in front of the Department of Health and Social Development office.

From there they will march around town with signs and noisemakers in tow.

They will finish at Ellen’s Barren Park where a fire pit will take place.

Dyson says the fire pit is being taken care of by the men to show their support since men aren’t able to join the women on the march.

The ‘Take Back the Night’ march was originally scheduled for last week.

It was postponed until Wednesday because of the bad weather.

Dyson says the forecast is calling for some drizzle or showers but they’ll be marching regardless.
